HEBREW – Tremble (1)

In our study of the tabernacle, we referred to Isa_66:1-2 in passing, but there is a truth there that deeply affects this writer and that is well worth our serious consideration in light of our modern day: “Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.”
Does God demand magnificent structures, such as the breathtaking St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, to worship Him? Not according to Isaiah, who in this chapter continues his prophecy concerning the glorious future. He begins, however, by contrasting the attitude of the true and faithful servant of God with the apostate and worldly character of most of the nation. He declares that there are only two places where God dwells: first in heaven and second in the contrite heart of the person who trembles at His Word. God is not looking for a temple made of stone or sacrifices made without thought. He is concerned rather with what is in the heart, specifically, our attitude toward His Word.
Paul declared the same truth: “Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling” (Php_2:12). To our shame, we see little, if any, fear and trembling in our churches. Oh, we see much excitement, activity, and other user-oriented attitudes, but where is the trembling before God’s Word?
Trembleth is a translation of chārēḏ (H2730), “to shake,” from which are derived the ideas of trembling and fear. God told Gideon, for example, to limit the number of soldiers by observing who was afraid, which sent 22,000 back home (Jdg_7:3). In 1Sa_4:13, Eli sat “by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God,” because the Ark of the Covenant was in danger of being captured by the Philistines.
As we continue these thoughts in coming days, let us each ask ourselves, “Do I tremble before God’s Word? Do I have a deep reverence for God’s revelation and a fear in my heart of disobeying it?”

HEBREW – Longeth


kāmah
Psa_63:1 is one of those verses of Scripture that once you read it, you can’t leave it: “O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is.” Once David understood who God (’Elōhiym, January 7) is, he longed for God in a way that should strike all of us.
To get the full impact of this verse, we need to set the stage (2 Samuel 15). After being driven from his throne by the political intrigue of his own son, Absalom, David is forced to leave Jerusalem and head into some of the most desolate, dismal, and depressing land on earth, the wilderness of Judea, which stretches right to the banks of the Dead Sea to the east.
David, therefore, writes: “My flesh longeth for thee.” Longeth is kāmah (H3642), which appears only here in the OT and literally means “to faint” and is related to an Arabic word that means “be pale of face, gray.” Driven into exile, it wasn’t his possessions, power, or position that David missed; rather it was God and the “sanctuary” (2Sa_15:2), that is, God’s presence in the tabernacle, that place of prayer and public worship, that David longed for.
Especially striking is that kāmah speaks of something physical. David’s craving for God was not some “emotional high,” rather a physical need; without God’s presence, his face was pale and he was physically ill. As the story continues, Zadok and Abiathar actually brought the Ark of the Covenant to David, sincerely thinking this would comfort and encourage him, but David sent them back. Why? It wasn’t some object that David needed, no matter how sacred. It was God that David needed. He didn’t want a picture; he needed the Person.
We, too, live in a “dry and thirsty land,” a desolate world. While it has amusements, some of which we can certainly enjoy, as did David, true pleasure is found in God alone. Likewise, if we were driven into exile, what would we miss most? Would we long for our nice house, creature comforts, and possessions? Or would it be God’s presence that we missed most? Would we miss the house of God, being with God’s people, and being immersed in His Word?

Instructions for the Ark


 

Numbers 4:15-20; 7:6-9

 

But unto the sons of Kohath he gave none: because the service of the sanctuary belonging unto them was that they should bear upon their shoulders,” Numbers 7:9.

 

I would love to have a front yard with all grass and no weeds. There are multiple ways I can prevent people from seeing the weeds in my yard. One way would be to get down on my hands and knees and dig up the weeds, then spray a herbicide to kill the remnants. Another way to prevent people from seeing the weeds would be to simply mow the yard so that all the grass and weeds are the same height. Which way do you think would be best? Mowing the weeds and grass to the same height would be the easiest way to hide the weeds, but would that really take care of the problem? No, it would just be a matter of time before the weeds crept up again. The best way to take care of it is also the most cumbersome way. That is usually the case in most jobs.

 

God gave specific handling instructions for the most holy things of the Tabernacle, including the ark of the covenant. For these things to be moved, they had to be wrapped up and carried on men’s shoulders. That was the best way to transport the objects because that was God’s way.

 

When it comes to displaying God’s glory in this world, there are no shortcuts. You may be able to trick others into thinking that you are holy by conforming to an appearance of holiness, but you will never trick God. We either do things God’s way or our way. Today, choose God’s way.

PRIESTS, PRIEST, AND A TORN VEIL
In the organization of religious practice in the Old Testament there existed a moveable tabernacle, and later temple built on the same order. The two-room structure hosted an initial room known as the Holy Place. There was also a second room heavily veiled from the first. It was known as the Holy of Holies or The Most Holy Place. It was in this second room that the Ark of the Covenant was located. It was here that the high priest offered the blood of sacrificial animals for the sins of the people on Yom Kippur (day of atonement). It was here that a manifestation of Almighty God appeared from time to time. Busy priests ministered about the sacrifices of the people outside these structures and were admitted into the first room for specific purposes that had to do with the table of showbread, the altar of incense, and the candlestick. However, no one entered the Holy of Holies except the High Priest and that after specific preparation and for definite purpose at the appointed time.
Now these things are written for our admonition upon whom the ends of the world are come, I Cor. 10:11. The Tabernacle and the Temple are no more, but they and their service are types and symbols of present realities that must not be overlooked or forgotten. The Old Testament priests are a type of New Testament priests which are bona fide, active church members, I Peter 2:5,9. The high priest of Israel is a type of our high priest, Who entered into the Holy of Holies in heaven with His own blood as a once-for-all offering for the sins of all who trust in Him, whereby He is able to save them the uttermost who come unto God by Him! Hebrews 7:25. But, as an high priest after the order of Melchisedek, rather than that of Aaron, He continues endlessly, the service of high priest in that He is at the right hand of God, making intercession for us, Romans 8:25, Heb. 7:25. Moreover, we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with our infirmities, Hebrews 4:15, but was tempted on all points as we are, yet without sin.
Upon the resurrection of our high priest from the tomb, the veil of the temple that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place was torn into two pieces, Matt. 27:51. The veil is no longer there to restrict New Testament priests from coming boldly before the throne of Grace with petitions for self and for others, and to find help in time of need. What a “hallelujah-type” privilege! The profound wonder of the age is that it is so little used. May God help us all to not be lazy, uncompassionate priests, but priests that are busier than the Old Testament priests ever were, serving, praying, teaching, ever learning, worshipping in spirit and in truth.

Hebrew – Testimonies


 

ēḏāh [and] ‘ēḏût

 

The second name we note for God’s Word is testimonies (or “testimony”). The Hebrew is ‘ēdāh (H5713; or ‘ēḏûṯ, H5715), another feminine noun originally meaning a “testimony, witness, or even a warning sign.” Of its twenty-five appearances, fourteen are in Psalms 119 (‘ēḏût appears sixty times, with nine of those in Psalms 119). We should also interject here that all eight of the synonyms we are examining appear in the first eleven verses of that wondrous psalm, which is devoted to praising the virtues, merits, and sufficiency of the Word of God and demonstrates the psalmist’s total commitment to it.

 

This word, therefore, refers to “testifying to a fact or event.” It first appears, for example, in Gen_21:30, where Abraham’s gift of lambs to Abimelech bore witness to Abraham’s statement concerning the ownership of the well at Beersheba. Even more graphic is Gen_31:52, where Jacob used a pile of stones to bear witness to the agreement between him and Laban concerning land boundaries.

 

It eventually came to be used, then, for a solemn testimony of the will of God, a sober and serious expression of God’s standards for human behavior. In other words, God’s testimonies are not suggestions or optional proposals, rather His absolute standards. It is tremendously significant, in fact, that the stone tablets containing the Ten Commandments are called God’s “testimony,” ‘ēḏût (Exo_25:16; Exo_31:18; Exo_32:15), God’s “solemn divine charge or duty.” It was also frequently used of the tabernacle (“tabernacle of testimony”, Exo_38:21; Num_1:50; Num_1:53) and even the Ark of the Covenant (“ark of the testimony,” Exo_25:22; Exo_26:33-34; Exo_30:6; Exo_30:26). Further, it is also used at times to refer to the entire law (February 13–16) of God (Psa_19:7; Psa_119:14; Psa_119:31; Psa_119:36; Psa_119:88; Psa_119:99; Psa_119:111; Psa_119:129; Psa_119:144; Psa_119:157).

 

The definition of right behavior, therefore, is not “up for grabs,” as relativism maintains in our day. It is rather a marked-out standard from God. This standard is also what we should be proclaiming without apology to the world, just as David did “before kings” (Psa_119:46); as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did before the king of Babylon (Dan_3:1-16); as Peter did before the religious leaders (Acts 4); as Stephen did before the council (Act_6:15 to Act_7:54); and as Paul did before Felix (Acts 24), Festus (Acts 25), and Agrippa (Acts 26).

Kingdom Restoration


 

Amos 9:11-15

 

In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old,” Amos 9:11. 

 

 

Adam lost the kingdom to Satan. Therefore, God created His Son to restore the kingdom back to God. This Son would be His Prophet, Priest, King and sacrifice. As the sacrifice, He would redeem mankind back to God. As God’s Prophet, He would bring God’s truth into the world of darkness. As God’s Priest, He would make the atonement and ask forgiveness for mankind’s sins. As God’s King, He will return on a conqueror’s war horse, wearing a golden crown, crush all the powers of darkness and set up God’s physical kingdom on the earth.

 

And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS” (Rev. 19:11-16). “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God” (Rev. 21:3).

Thanksgiving


Psalm 100:1-5 Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. 2. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing. 3. Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people , and the sheep of his pasture. 4. Enter into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. 5. For the Lord is good: his mercy is everlasting: and his truth endureth to all generations.

  1. the bounty of the Lord, My how he has blessed us. The world and the economy is failing but God cares and watches over His own, those who have entrusted their soul to Him. The Bible says that because of “Him we exist and function every day.” We truly have been blessed beyond what we deserve.

  1. the blessings of love, What does I love you truly mean. I see the term love meaning that one is truly unique and special in the eyes of others. God sees that in each one of His children a uniqueness that is different from all others. My mom and dad had seven children and to my mother each one was unique and she always remembered what each one preferred on their birthday. That is something special. My God sees me as unique and special. I AM LOVED!!!!

  1. the beauty of the Holiness of God. This day of Thanksgiving, I get to praise God for His Holiness within which is great beauty. There is nothing or no one that is Holy except for God and His vision of us as He sees us through the blood of His dear Son, Jesus Christ. What joy, and deep felt appreciation we should have for this greatest of beauties, the Holiness of God and His acceptance of us.

PSALM 26:6 – I will wash mine hands in innocency: so will I compass thine altar, O Lord: PSALM 26:7 – That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works.

Hebrews 13:14,15 –For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. [15] By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

The habitation of God, whether it was in the Tabernacle, the Temple, or individual local Churches, wherever it was or is, it was always meant to be a gathering place to seek truth while growing in faith, hope, and love. It was, and is, to be a place where children of God learn to behave themselves after they have been saved by the grace of God. The habitation of his Spirit in his house is where his honor dwells by the presence of his Son.

WHERE GOD MEETS US


HEBREWS 10:25
Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is;
but exhorting one another: and so much the more,
as ye see the day approaching.

I appears to me that God has always had a special place to meet with and spend time with His people. We find in the book of Genesis that God walked with Adam and Eve in the cool of the evening. Exodus chapter 25:22; God gave Moses instructions about the mercy seat, and said “And there I will meet with thee, and commune with thee…”. Who among us can forget the meetings that Abraham and Jacob had with God at Bethel (the house of God)? When the tabernacle was constructed God made an appearance unto Moses and said; I will meet my people at the door of the tabernacle. When the people entered their land the temple was constructed and yearly people traveled from where they lived to worship at the temple. Today, the church (the people-not the building) is where God meets His people.

Do not misunderstand, each of us pray and talk with God through the week. Yet the evidence is clear, God has the desire to meet with His people in an assembly. I believe He loves us so much, He wants to be with us as a family. My mom and dad always looked forward to a visit from one of their children. They were thrilled, ecstatic, beside them selves when all seven children and spouses and grandkids and great grandkids visited at the same time. God our Father has set a day for a family reunion where we sing together, pray together, and worship together. There are many reasons for this, but let me interject one; it is practice for when we are all together in the presence of the Lord.

If you don’t like getting together with God’s wonderful people, you probably won’t like heaven and you just might have a spiritual relationship problem that needs to be taken care of.  I am going to that place God has appointed to meet with Him this morning. I will be in the house of God with all His wonderful people. How about you?
