NEEDED: B’NAI HASSEPHER

B’NAI HASSEPHER: these are Hebrew words that translate “Sons of the Book.” The need of such is underscored as the world races pell-mell to a grand finale, and as pressure increases in churches, and among pastors to be politically correct, non-offensive, and heavily involved in religious social activities. Could it be described as a dumbing down of the churches in general? Little attention beyond a spiritual salvation emphasis is given to folks from the book. Think about it!
It is lamentable that such an obvious gap exists between modern ministers and those of a generation or two gone by. The former ones were B’NAI HASSEPHER, “Sons of the Book,” much more concerned with the unity, harmony, and symmetry of the Holy Book being set forth than a psychology lesson on how to win friends and influence people to enhance a religiously social group. While it is laudable that the basic tenants of the gospel are still oft presented in most of our churches, it may also be heard in any number of others churches that would be regarded heretical otherwise. One may attend any number of worship services nowadays and leave wondering what he may have heard that he would not have heard in several denominational churches. It is comparable to one excitedly hogging all the milk possible, but never having access to meat.
In a large number of preachers (about 500) I heard a young college graduate extol in psychological terms how pastors should benefit from increased membership in their churches. After so long a time, an older minister arose and loudly asked, “Is the Bible not still our rule of faith and practice?” Upon hearing that affirmed, he went on to reply, “Well, then, isn’t all of this just a bunch of foolishness?” It was! But there are too few who understand that today, and fewer who dare to stand up strongly to it.
A number of years ago, a fellow pastor of a fairly large church confided in me that he was going to leave the ministry. Somewhat shocked, I asked why. He replied that he had preached all the sermons he could find in the book, and was tired of repeating himself. Incredible! His inability, or unwillingness to study THE BOOK and believe what he found, then prepare it for a scrumptious meal for his congregation led him to the inevitable sickness produced by formal rituals and stale tables.
In times such as these, there is a crying need for true spiritual refreshment and nourishment that can come only from hearts submitted to God, and minds studied up on His Word! Let social religion be for modernists. I appeal to all who take the name of our Lord unto themselves to labor to actually become B’NAI HASSEPHER, SONS OF THE BOOK! Let it be underscored that when it is time to cross the bar from which no traveler returns, the only thing one can take with him is what he believes. One cannot believe what he does not know. Thus, the pursuit, and sharing, of spiritual knowledge should be the prime directive of us all.

BACK TO SCHOOL

2Ti 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

2Pe 3:18 But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever.

Public schools, private schools, seminaries and universities all go back to class. Maybe it is time we all go back to school. The word study implies more than just a casusal reading for pleasure. The Greek word for study is spoudazw spoudazo, (spoo-dad’-zo) means to use speed, i.e. to make effort, be prompt or earnest:–do (give) diligence, be diligent (forward), endeavour, labour, study. There are certainly certain things that we gather as we look at going back to school: A set time to start and end each day, class gatherings, and an instructor. All these can be applied as we set aside a time of each day to read and study the Word of God. We can set aside a certain place to do our studies as we pray and meditate over the Word. We may also need reference books or instructors to help us in the quest for greater knowledge of the Word.

Yes, it should be back to school days for all of God’s people. Without time in the Word we will become weak and tossed too and fro from every wind of dectrine that comes along. There is a great falling away today from real Bible study and even some churches are doing away with Bible studies so that the church becomes weak and falls pray to preachers who fail to stand for Biblical preaching and Biblical standards.

We are given the reason for studing as being threefold: “approved unto God” , “needeth not to be ashamed”, and “rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Today we begin a study that will continue throughout the month, one which I pray will touch our hearts and lives like nothing else can, namely, a study of the names of God used in the OT. This is critically important in our day, for many of the problems we see in the church come from a wrong conception of God. We simply do not know who He is. To combat this, instead of the shallow fluff (and even heresy) that lines the shelves of many Christian bookstores, would that pastors encouraged their people to read books such as A. W. Tozer’s The Knowledge of the Holy, or Arthur W. Pink’s The Attributes of God. To go deeper, Puritan Steven Charnock’s, The Existence and Attributes of God, will furnish them with a lifetime of depth and meditation.

 

Before plunging into the many names of God in the OT, however, let us first consider three words that will help lay a foundation: name, remember (January 5), and meditation (January 6). While the etymology of the root šēm (H8034), which appears some 864 times, is uncertain, some scholars believe that it comes from “the Arabic root wšm ‘to mark or brand,’ hence an external mark to distinguish one thing or person from another.” Names in the Semitic world—the “Semites,” descendants of Noah’s son Shem, were the racial family to which Israel belonged—were much more significant than in our Western culture. A person’s name, in fact, “often carried more significance than an identification mark; it was considered to be a description of character or conditions.” Nabal’s name, for example, reflects the fact that He was a fool (1Sa_25:25);Eve means “the mother of all living” (Gen_3:20); Isaac means “he laughs,” a reminder of his parents’ laughter at the thought they could conceive a child in their old age; and Babel means “confusion,” hence the name of the tower where God confounded earthly languages.

 

The names of God, therefore, are extremely significant. So important are His names that some theologians call this “name-theology.” I like that term. “Theology” is the study of God, and to know His names is to know Him. As we study “name-theology,” let us seek God with a dedication of mind, devotion of heart, and depth of soul.

 

Scriptures for Study: What do Psa_20:5; Psa_44:8 encourage us to do concerning God’s name? What, then, is our responsibility, according to Exo_9:16?

Bible Analysis Two Rules


TWO PRIMARY RULES FOR RIGHTLY UNDERSTANDING THE BIBLE.

This is the most important chapter of this book. To learn the two primary rules here presented is absolutely necessary in order for one to be able to understand the Bible, and be able to teach it without shame.

The late Ben M. Bogard said:

“Perhaps the most misleading idea people have is to think that when they open the Bible, no matter what passage they may read, that the passage applies to them, for they think all the Bible applies to them, but it is not true . . . The student may be startled to learn that much of what we know as the Bible does not apply to us in this age” (The Golden Key, p. 5).

The writer’s personal experiences verify the truths stated in the above quitation. When either a saved or unsaved person reads the Bible with the idea in mind that God does all the talking, everything in the Bible is to be practiced by the reader, the Bible seems to be a confused, nonsensical, out-dated book.

I.TWO PRIMARY RULES

There are two primary rules by which one may learn to arrive at the particular meaning of any passage in the Bible. These rules are both scriptural and scientific. The two rules are

1.the five point question rule, and
2.the proper application rule.

1.The Five Point Question Rule
This rule must be applied by anyone reading the Bible in order to interpret any passage intelligently. One does not have to study this book or this system of study in order to do this. But a study of this rule, as illustrated, will help one to be able to learn the particular teachings of the Bible much more rapidly. One may apply some ponts of the following rule, without knowing such a rule exists. But one who knows the five point rule is enabled to learn the actual meaning of a passage much more quickly than one who does not know such a scientific, scriptural system or rule for analysis of written or spoken matter exists. In reading the Bible one should find out the following five things about every passage:

1.Who is speaking or writing?
2.To whom or about whom is he speaking or writing?
3.“About what subject is he speaking or writing?
4.When or about what time is he speaking or writing?
5.What is the occasion for the speaking or writing?

2.The Proper Application Rule.

This rule is designed to teach one how to apply a given Bible truth, after the truth is determined. This concerns the “how” of applying known Bible truths. Since it has been pointed out that the New Testament and the Psalms are God’s rule and guide for man’s faith in practice today, this proper application rule enables one to know how to determine what doctrinal teachings of the Psalms and new Testament he is to practice today. This proper application rule for understanding the Scriptures has two parts:

1.The general application of a truth or deed to every person.
2.The particular application of a truth or deed to an individual or particular group.

For instance, some Scriptures are written describing the condition of all the unsaved. Other Scroptures describe the condition of particular unsaved individuals or groups. That men who are lost, wicked, shall all be cast into hell is a general application of the Bible’s teaching on the future punishment of the wicked – Psalm 9:17. That some lost people shall suffer more in hell than others is a particular truth, requires a particular application of some passages of Scriptures that tell how and to what extent some shall suffer in hell – Matt. 10:15; 11:24; 23:14-15; Luke 10:12′

II.FIVE POINT RULE ILLUSTRATED

A. One should always, upon reading any passage in the Bible, first ask himself, “Who is doing this speaking or writing?” There are at least seven classes of speakers in the Bible.

1. Sometimes God is speaking.
a. God spike to Adam and Eve, Gen. 3:9.
b. God spike to Noah, Gen. 9:8
c. God spoke to Abraham, Gen. 12:7; 22:1,3.
d. God spoke to Moses, Exodus 3:4, 14.
e. God spoke to all present, Matt. 3:17, 17:5.
f. God spoke to Saul, Acts 9:5

2.Sometimes angels are speaking.
a. An angel spoke to Hagar, Gen. 16:7-11.
b. An angel spoke to Abraham, Gen. 22:11.
c. An angel of the lord spoke to Balaam, num. 22:31.
d. An angel of the Lord spoke to Manoah, Judges 13:13-14.
e. An angel spoke to Elijah, I Kings 19:5; II Kings 1:3.
f. An angel of the Lord spike to Haggai, hag. 1:9, 12.
g. An angel spoke to Joseph, Matt. 1:20; to Zacharias, Luke 1:11-20; to Mary, Luke 1:26-37; to the Marys, Matt. 28:2-8; to the shepherds, Luke 2:9-14; to the apostles, Acts 5:9-10; to Paul, Acts 27;23-34

3.Sometimes the Devil is speaking.

It is true that both God and good angels are sometimes speaking as one reads portions of the Bible. But it is also true that sometimes the Devil is speaking. Whatever truth the Devil might relate, that is put in the Bible, was spoken by the Devil as a means of ensnaring men. The Defvil never told the truth or any truth for any good or holy purpose. The first conversation in which Satan ever engaged with man was hel to deceive man. And before he finished he lied to Eve, saying, “Thou shalt not surely die.” One should not use the Devil’s language and apply it to the Lord. In the following passages of the Bible the Devil spoke in person:

a. To Eve, Gen. 3:1-4.
b. To God, Job 1:7, 9-11; Job 2:2, 4-5.
c. To Jesus, Luke 4:3, 6, 7, 9, 10.
d. Devils (demon spirits) spoke, Luke 4:41.

4.Sometimes prophets are speaking.
From Aaron and Moses (Ex. 3:10; 7:1; Deut. 18:14) to Malachi (Mal. 1:1), every prophet of God sought to reveal God’s will. They were true prophets.

But there were also false prophets, whose words are recorded in the Old Testament. Should their words be taken for practice? (See Jer. 14:13, 14; 23:21-32; 27:8-15; Luke 6:26; Matt. 24:24-26; Acts 13:6-10.)

5.Sometimes wicked men are speaking.

Should one accept what a wicked man says at face value, as a matter to be practiced? And when the Bible quotes what wicked men have said, one should not take the words of some wicked man for his personal practice. Wicked men, or unsaved men, spoke in the following recorded passages:

a. The fool, psalm 14:1; Luke 12:16-20.
b. The harlot, prov. 7:13-20; John 4:19, 20.
c. Pilate, Matt. 27:24.
d. Man born blind, unsaved, John 9:31, 35, 36. Some use the words of this unsaved man to try to prove that God will not hear a sinner pray. Such is an abuse of intelligent interpretation of the Bible.
e. Examples in Acts 3:5-7; 6:11; 18:12-16; 24:1-9.

SOMETHING I HAVE NOTICED

Once upon a time – maybe that is not the proper way to begin this article, but it is the way I choose. What appears to me to be popular is to read books written by men and thereby gain our Biblical knowledge. The problem that I see is, this is not Biblical knowledge but what some one else states is Biblical.

Our fore-fathers displayed such a profound depth of knowledge in their day that it should shame us today in the shallowness of our “Jesus living.” These men, many with an education that left a lot to be desired learned how to study the Word of God. The availability of the men written books were limited and they had to pursue the Word of God and became knowledgable in the truths of the Word by direct study of God’s Word. Now our command is – “Study to whew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. II Tim. 2:15.

I see a great problem that is occurring at this time. People have forgotten the rudiments of studying. A simple reminder might be appropriate.

Isaiah 28:9 lays out the method of study clearly when it says – “Whom shall he teach knowledge? And whom shall he make to understand doctrine? Them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. 10 – For precept must be upon precept, precept uon precept; line upon line; here a little, and there a little: 11 – For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. 12 – “To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear. 13 – But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken. 14 – Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.

Every time I read weaned, I remember what my father called those saved that were shallow – “BOTTLE BABIES. There are to many that are exactly what Romans 10:2 describes – “For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.” This is about the same as a car going down the street at top speed with no driver at the wheel and it careens at every bump it hits. That is a dangerous situation.

Will we learn to study the Word of God and not man’s opinion of the Word. May we use wise principles of precept on precept and line on line.

Just a note that should follow Lesson 1


NOTE: The Scriptures state that Satan will use whatever means he can to confuse and undermine God’s Word and work. He has been very effect by playing upon men and womens natural, carnal, fleshly desires. One does not have to know Greek or Hebrew to understand the truth. The problem to-day is that few know how to study the Bible and we are called to “Study to show thyself approved before God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

The implications of the above passage is as plain as the sun in the sky. The statement, “rightly dividing” indicates there is a wrong way to divide. Those that wrongly divide, if they have been born again will stand before the Lord one day and give account. There IS no excuse for being wrong.

Most people are wrong because they reject truth with-out study, therefore falling under the influence of Satan and his demons by believing a lie that Satan has made available and appeals to the flesh. Read John 6:53 -66 which tells of the disciples that heard some things that did not appeal to their flesh and they found abhorrent, they turned and walked with Jesus no more.

There are many well intentioned people that have been born again and going to glory that have not found the exquisite beauty that the Word holds for those that ‘study’ to show themselves approved. The interrelationship of the Old Testament and the New Testament is astounding.

This leads us to the study in front of us. If we are wrong on the doctrine of the Church, we will be wrong on many other doctrines and not understand the blood that Jesus shed. Then we will stand before the Lord and have to give account for our lack and for misleading others.

AN EXERCISE IN FUTILITY


I find some something interesting every day. Many cause me concern and some cause me grief. I am very much a person that believes and tries to practice the admonition – “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Several comments upon this scripture that Paul gave to Timothy –
1. Study – what does  study mean?  1. To apply the mind to; to read and examine for the purpose
 of learning and understanding; as, to study law or theology; to study languages. [1913 Webster]   Reading the Bible is not study; yet is beneficial. Study is a weariness of the flesh because it is more intense than the study we did when we were in school. In school we simply accepted what the teacher said and read the book and that was the sum total of study. When we apply study to the Bible, it means research. Jesus said of the Pharisee’s – “Search the scriptures; for in them  ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” The Pharisee’s were known for their study. Their problem was the way they studied. They couldn’t find Christ. Now we speak evil of them. Yet their problem is a problem that is common today. Their division and study of God’s word was faulty because of wrong division. So, maybe we have a lot of Pharisee’s today. Now no one will admit it but they would quickly call any one that had a different understanding of the Word of God a Pharisee, a heretic and would jump in to save the others from themselves.

2. The conclusion we come to has to agree with what God has given us. If it does not agree with God, then it is wrong. It is not acceptable. We are told in the book of John that “God is a Spirit; and those that worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in truth.” If we are not worshipping in truth – we are not worshipping! See: it doesn’t make any difference what you believe or I believe; it doesn’t make any difference what you desire or I desire and God certainly doesn’t have understand; He is God and it is all about Him and His Son.

3. What we do has to be approved by God. Now that is just a crying shame because that eliminates anything that I would want to do. It all has to be God or it is not acceptable to God. Does that mean that God is narrow minded or mean? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!! It means that God is sovereign and as our creator has the right to make what rules and regulations He so desires to make. He sets the rule and we observe it or what we do is not acceptable to God.

4. Notice the “workman”. Any “workman” is not satisfied with what they have learned in the past; they are continually learning and constantly re-evaluating what they learned in the past to see if it is true. Notice, the terminology itself indicates it is tiring and can be frustrating but when we finally work and find the truth that God has for us; it is refreshing and exhilarating.

5. Rightfully and wrongfully dividing the Word of Truth. We had best get it right. Hosea 4:1 says “Hear the Word of the Lord, ye children of Israel: for the Lord hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.” Now that is pretty straight forward. Notice that little term used – no truth. No truth indicates a lack of knowledge of God. How terrible not to know our creator and the one that provided for our salvation through the sacrifice of His own Son. Now we get all emotional over Jesus crucifixion and think that since we express our emotion it makes up for the lack of truth. If you will; notice Romans 2:16 – 20. Notice that the judgement of God will be through Jesus Christ according to the Gospel. So now we find that this Word of God will be used to judge us with. We better know it. Notice verse 20 – An instructor of the foolish. I don’t want to be that foolish. A teacher of babes, but even more condemning is the following – hast the form of knowledge. Not true knowledge but seems to be knowledge so therefore it is not truth but a lie.

6. Take to heart the following passage. II Timothy 3:1-10. In the last days perilous days shall come. The verses after the first verse is a rather correct description of this day and age. Notice the indictments that are listed:
    1.having a form of godliness
    2. lead captive silly women
    3. laden with sin
    4. led away with divers lusts.
    5. Ever learning.
    6. never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
    7. Jannes and Jambres were such and with stood Moses
    8. They resist the truth
    9. They were called men of corrupt minds – WOW I wonder why? because they resisted the truth? Surely not.
    10. reprobate concerning the faith. Faith – a word that means a system of beliefs; doctrine; doctrinal beliefs. There is a system of beliefs that we should adhere to and by so doing we will be in the truth and these two men wanted what they wanted and not what God wanted and what happened?
    11. they shall proceed no further. UNACCEPTABLE!!!!! this is Old Testament, why in the world is Paul quoting the Old Testament in the New Testament – it is a legal book that has nothing to do with us today. Would that be your way of casting away the Old Testament. Paul didn’t. He knew it was of great value to Timothy and to us.
    12. Paul had a doctrine. Remember he said, follow me as I follow Christ? Oh, you missed that did you? Paul spent 3 years face to face with Christ, learning from Jesus personally, the things to pass on to us. It is interesting that Paul was steeped in the Old Testament “legal” book and preached Christ crucified with great conviction and people being saved from it. How could He do that when it is a legal system. On the day of Pentecost Peter stood up and preached using Joel as a text. Then Peter refers to David who certainly is Old Testament and preaches Christ crucified, dead, buried, and rose again. Acts 3: 13 Peter refers to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. How can the story of grace come from a legal book? The New Testament is replete with references to the Old Testament. Without the Old Testament, the New Testament would be incomplete.

That clarion call to truth is loud and clear. Study. It is so sad to see those that are seemingly intelligent and informed and then open their mouth and let all know that their study is very incomplete.

The Church – English Word


CHURCH – WHAT IT IS

The English Word “Church”

My intent is to show what the Church is by using a methodical study. We need to begin by defining the word. I will be using references that are experts in language and linguistics.

The Word Defined

Overbey in his book (The Meaning of Ecclesia in the N.T. p.7) says, “According to most scholars the word church comes from a Greek word meaning “the Lord’s” with the word house usually understood.” This is taken from the Greek word “kuriakos” which comes from the word “kurios,” meaning “the Lord’s.”

Thayer says, (Thayer’s Lexicon, pl 365) “A Biblical and ecclesiastical word – of or belonging to the Lord, or relating to the Lord.”

Overbey asserts, “Time and the peculiarities of each language had its effect on the word (kuriakos) but the word still remained recognizable. In English it is church, in Old English cirice, in German Kirche, in Scottish kirk, and in Old Scandinavian kyrka.”

The Meaning of the Greek word “Ecclesia”

I want you to remember the word “Church” and it’s meaning while we examine the word “ecclesia”. As previously stated, most scholars agree that the English word “church” comes from a Greek word (kiriakos) which means “the Lord’s” with the word house usually understood.

Here is the etymology of the word Ecclesia.

  • Ek – out of.

  • Kaleo – to call.

  • Hence, a “calling out.”

The word church, according to Overbey, appears in the King James Bible because of Rule 3, established by King James. Rule 3 states – The old ecclesiastical words to kept.

  1. K. Cross makes this observation. “In Acts 19:39-41 the term is used twice. Once to refer to the ‘lawful assembly’ which was called out of the citizens of Ephesus to handle legal matters in the city. The other to refer to the assembly that had been called together to run Paul and his companions out of town. In either case the assembly, or ecclesia (for this is the word used here), was a called out group, called together for a specific purpose, and local in nature. This was the common usage of the term and always the proper definition of an ecclesia. THIS IS WHAT OUR LORD SAID HE WOULD BE BUILDING.”

  1. K. Cross continues, “If Jesus Christ had intended to build another kind of company there were other words in the language He could have used. He could have used the word ‘Synagoga,’ a term without such limitations and yet designating an assembly. It would certainly have been more fitting for a ‘universal company.’ He could have also used the word ‘panagris’ if He had a solemn assembly in mind of a massive and festal nature. But these were rejected in favor of the most limiting term in the Greek language with reference to an assembly; a term that can only be properly interpreted as an assembly local in nature.”

  1. K. Cross further states the word ecclesia is more than a mere assembly. The word is a compounding of two words. Kaleo, ‘to call” and ‘ek’, meaning out, or literally ‘to call out.’ Thus, an ‘ekklesia’ is a Called out assembly, implying some conditions. The Lord did not call all Christians in the area that cared to assemble into His ‘ekklesia,’ but he was very selective about it in Matthew 4:17-22; Matthew 9:1 John 1:43,44 and on until He had 120 in that assembly by the time he went back to the Father. I Cor. 12:28 says that ‘God hath set some in the church (ekklesia)…,’ not all. The same passage states that He set the apostles in the ‘ekklesia,’ and on the occasion when the apostles were chosen there was quite a congregation of disciples present of whom he chose the apostles – and Paul says the apostles, not the crowd, were set in the ‘ekklesia’.

Roy Mason asserts, “…I submit the proposition that the church that Jesus founded was the local assembly, and that to use the word ecclesia to designate a ‘universal,’ or ‘invisible’ church is to pervert its meaning, and to fall into serious error.” (The Church That Jesus Built, Mason, p. 26).

A. C. Dayton said, “The Greek ‘ekklesia’ consisted of certain individuals, who, when assembled and organized, constituted an official body for the transaction of such business as might come before them. It was not merely an assembly, but an official assembly, consisting of persons specifically qualified, and who had each his specific rights and duties as a member of the ekklesia to which was intrusted the management of public business; but the ekklesia were called out from the mass… Every assembly was not an ekklesia, nor was every ekklesia an ekklesia of Christ”. (Theodosia Earnest, pp. 72,73).

This leaves the question, why does the King James Bible use the word Church instead of the word congregation or the word assembly. I have heard those that would use the word assembly instead of Church. I have heard the arguments put forth. Here is what I have to say about the issue. Jesus said “I will build my ecclesia – assembly.

So Wednesday afternoon, I leave my house and walk to the assembly. One of my neighbors happens to be in their yard and ask me where I am going. I say, I’m going to the assembly. Reply – oh, the school assembly, No – Oh, the assembly at 3rd St and 4th Ave. No, I’m not going to the corner tavern. So what assembly are you going to? Church (THE LORD’S). My neighbors reply – why didn’t you say that to begin with? My reply – I wanted to be correct in usage whether you understood it or not. I believe that the word Church was used before they began building Church buildings. I also believe that the assembly we attend is “The Lord’s” assembly. The word Church is proper in declaring to others that we are attending “The Lords’ assembly.
