Martyr fires

Bound and drowned for Christ

Aeltgen Baten an aged woman. And Maeyken Wouters a young woman about 24 years both received Christ and were baptized and gave evidence of their faith before God and man in their community in their native city of Liege, Belgium. For no more than this, the authorities of the state church (Roman Catholic) sent 14 trappers (those who were charged to bring in heretics) to apprehend these two offensive women.  They were imprisoned for ten weeks in the officials’ tower, where they were enticed to turn from their faith. One bishop’s chaplain came to Maeyken on bended knee with wine trying to get her to recant but she repelled the “devil’s deceipt.” A friend came and said, “Just yield on one point and you can live as before.” She said, “Would you advise that I should forsake God and become a child of the Devil?” The man said, “Then you will have to die.” She said, “I would rather have this come to pass than to enjoy the light of day.” These two saints of God endured the worst tortures devised by depraved mankind, often fainting and being revived with cold water. They were so sustained that Aeltgen said, “Yes, if the door stood open, I should not wish to go away.” In all their sufferings they were joyful in their God, thankful to Him and sang praises to Him in prison. Their sentence was that they were to be bound, gagged and cast alive from the Meuse River Bridge. And so it was. Aeltgen said, “O Lord, this is a beautiful city indeed; would that it repented with Ninevah.” Maeyken asked that she might pray, her executioner told her to pray to the lords the magistrates, and believe with us in the Romish Church, and you shall save your life. And so the depths swallowed up these two precious saints on July 24, 1595, and their Lord received them.

THE APOSTATE CHARISMATICS WILL BE THE FIRST TO FALL

That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.” Ecclesiastes 3:15

Back in March, we reported to you how Anglican priest Tony Palmer, a member of the Roman Catholic Ecumenical Delegation for Christian Unity and Reconciliation, gave a rousing call to Kenneth Copeland’s church to “return to Mother Rome”. He was met with a hero’s welcome by a very enthusiastic congregation. And just in case you thought that it was a “one off” meeting, you would be sadly mistaken.

Flash forward to today in Vatican City, Rome, and who do we see meeting around the table?  Why, it looks like charismatic leader Kenneth Copeland, Roman Catholic priest Tony Palmer, and assorted others from the Charismatic movement in Toronto breaking bread with the False Prophet from the book of Revelation, Pope Francis.

At their  meeting today in Rome, they discussed among other things, the coming alliance of the Roman Catholic church with the Charismatic apostates. This has already been in the works for quite some time, and they feel very confident of making the merger. Of course, at first, it will simply be  a “let’s focus on what we have in common” ruse whose mask will be dropped soon after the Charismatics have grown comfortable with the idea.

Absorbing the Charismatics and the Pentecostal movements will create the foundation the Vatican needs for their One World Religion. The Vatican’s alliance with Islam has already been established to great success. Just like Rome used the army of Spain as muscle for theSpanish Inquisition during the dark ages, Rome will use the blood-thirsty Muslim terrorists of Islam to regain control in our day. Joel Osteen has already met with Pope Francis, and is a huge supporter of his efforts.

And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.” Revelation 18:4

The Roman Catholic Church brags constantly that they have “never changed”, and that is true. The Vatican that exists today is exactly the same demonic system that began the Spanish Inquisition to kill Christians back then. As Ecclesiastes says, that which has already been, is the thing that shall be.

Even so, come Lord Jesus…quickly.

95 – April – 05 – THIS DAY IN BAPTIST HISTORY PAST


Not many noble are called”
1878 – Dr. William H. Brisbane, nobleman preacher of the gospel, died on this date.  Paul said, “…not many noble are called.”  Someone has said, “thankfully that ‘m’ is not an ‘a’ for ‘any’ or there would have been none of the upper class that would enter the kingdom.  It may be difficult but not impossible.  The Lord Jesus said, “With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.”  (Mt 19:26).  Brisbane was born into aristocracy near Charleston, S.C. and became an heir to great wealth and position.  His early education was with the Roman Catholic, Bishop England and later with Rev. William Brantley, president of Beaufort College.  When but fifteen he was sent to a military school at Middletown, CT, from which he graduated with honors at eighteen.  Shortly thereafter he received Christ and felt the call to preach the gospel and it wasn’t long until he was in the front ranks of the Baptist ministry in the South.  His culture and wealth gave him access to important people such as Jackson, Calhoun, Clay, and Daniel Webster.  He spent a great deal of time in the State and nations capitals.  Because he was a large slave holder he became deeply involved in the most pressing issue of the day.  After struggling prayerfully over this question for years he came to the conclusion that slavery was morally and spiritually wrong and expended some of his wealth to purchase land in Ohio, and after buying back some of the slaves that he had sold, resettled them providing homes and abundant supplies.  He spent his last twenty-five years preaching the gospel of Christ in Wisconsin.

327 – Nov. 23 – This Day in Baptist History Past


 

Revival in France

 

1853 – The publication Progres de L’Oie of France gave an account of an exhumation that took place when Napoleon III was emperor, and the Roman Catholic cMlergy had full control over the government. The event took place in the little village of Chelles near the city of Campiegne where the well-to-do Andru family lived. J.B. Cretin, a Baptist pastor, witnessed to them and seeing the errors of Romanism they received Christ, which produced a small gathering every Lord’s Day for worship and study. The group increased and people began to come from neighboring villages to hear the gospel. This brought about the anger of the local priest who did all in his power to stop the meetings. The only child of the Andru family was driven from the school; and Mr. Andru couldn’t get reapers at harvest time, for the priest threatened excommunication to anyone who helped. When grandfather Andru died, who had also been saved, Pastor Cretin was asked to bury him. Permission was granted by the mayor, in that this was the first non-catholic to be buried there, and more than 400 came to the funeral where they heard the gospel preached. The priest was livid, so he hired town drunks to dig up the body and rebury it in an area with suicides. The Bishop came and cleansed the ground. The mayor found a loophole to allow it and was found some months later hanged at his home and was buried with the suicides, private scandals led another official who had helped in the cover-up to shoot himself, and the priest was convicted of immorality and had to leave the parish. Henri Andru was called to preach and a great Revival broke out in that area.

272 – Sept. 29, 1512 – This Day in Baptist History Past


The Donatists Repudiated this Falsity

Balthasar Hubmaier received the doctorate of theology from the University of Ingolstadt in Germany and entered the Roman Catholic ministry. Through his studies he became disillusioned with what he had been taught and by 1523 was in contact with the Protestant reformer, Zwingli and he was transformed by the grace of God. His outspoken ways brought great persecution down upon him. He like Peter, under pressure, denied the truth, but repented and was able to give a glorious testimony to God’s grace in the flames of martyrdom on March 10, 1528. Three days later his wife Elizabeth, undaunted in her faith, was thrown into the Danube River and drowned. The doctrine that caused our Anabaptist forebears to suffer at the hands of Catholic and Protestant Reformers alike was infant baptism. That wicked heresy was established in the third century as Cyprian consulted with sixty bishops upon the question of whether children were to be baptized on the third or eighth day from their birth? Our forefathers the Donatists, repudiated this falsity. The Reformers, Luther, Zwingli, and Calvin continued in this heresy, and also persecuted the Baptists, and other non-conformists over this issue, which they had received from Augustine. [Wm. R. Targets of Persecution

On the 10th of June, 1535, a furious edict was published at Brussels. Death by fire was the punishment on all Baptists who should be detected and should refuse to abjure. If they recanted they were still to die, but not by fire; the men were to be put to death by the sword, ‘the women in a sunken pit.’ Those who resisted the operation of the edict by failing to deliver up Baptists [Anabaptists] to the authorities, were to suffer the same punishment as accomplices.”What a troublesome time in which to live! Religious freedom was unknown to Anabaptists, and they were forced to worship covertly, everywhere because informers were promised one-third of the confiscated estates of the dreaded Anabaptists!

 

Perhaps the actual wording of a portion of the edict might prove enlightening as to the pressures that our forefathers experienced.

 

“In order to provide against and remedy the errors and seductions which many sectaries and authors of mischief, with their followers, have dared to sow and spread in our possessions, in opposition to our holy Christian faith, the sacraments and commands of the holy church our mother; we have at various times decreed…many mandates containing statutes, edicts, ordinances, together with punishments that transgressors should suffer; in order that by such means the common and simple people might guard themselves against the aforesaid errors and abuses, and that their chief promoters might be punished and corrected as an example to all.

 

And it, having come to our knowledge, that…many and various sectaries, even some who are denominated Anabaptist or rebaptizers, have promoted…their said abuses and errors, in order to mislead the same…to the great scandal and contempt of the sacrament of holy baptism, and of our edicts, statutes, and ordinances:

 

Therefore, being desirous to provide against and remedy the same, we summon and command, that, from this time…you make proclamation in all the parts of limits of your jurisdiction, that all who are, or shall be found to be, infected by the cursed sect of Anabaptists, or rebaptizers, of what state or condition they may be, abettors, followers, and accomplices, shall suffer the forfeiture of life and estate, and shall without delay, be brought to the severest punishment.”

 

There are several other paragraphs of the edict, but this example is typical of the many edicts issued by the Roman Catholic and even Protestant leaders who harmonized only at the point of persecuting the re-baptizers. Catholics and some reformers believed that “re-baptism” was a repudiation of the baptism by the state church, which they considered salvation. Anabaptists did not accept “sacramental grace” and “infant sprinkling.” They denied that they were re-baptizers at all! Thank God for grace in Christ and the privilege of obeying His ordinance as a testimony! Praise the Lord for our glorious freedom of religion and liberty of conscience to serve Him without man’s dictates!

Why Did Evangelicals Break Away From Fundamentalism?


Don Boys, Ph.D. has written a very perceptive article. The more one insists on a  literal meaning to the Word of God, and living a consecrated, devoted, separated life; the more they are attacked by religionist that look so much like the world their lives belie their words.

Non-Catholic churches in America and Canada can be divided loosely into Modernists (who don’t believe the Bible is the Word of God); Evangelicals (who claim to believe in the veracity of the Word but won’t fight or even fuss about it); and Fundamentalists (who believe in the fundamentals of the Word of God and are accused of being mad at everyone else).

 

The title “fundamentalist” is taken from a series of 12 books published in 1910-1915 written by 65 leading Christian scholars; however, I believe that such Christians go back to the beginning of Christianity! All believers in the early churches were Fundamentalists until the Gnostics arrived! The early Christians simply believed in “the fundamentals,” not only what is essential but what is important.

 

I gladly wear the badge of “Fundamentalist” because I have discovered in my life that these people are the finest, godliest, kindest, theologically sound, and most sincere people alive. Yes, we have had and will have a few scoundrels who have embarrassed Christianity but then that was true  for Paul and the Corinthian church. The Bible commands us how to deal with public sinners; however, even many Fundamentalist churches usually refuse to follow that command. I’m still thrilled to be a Fundamentalist.

 

The Modernist-Fundamentalist battle raged back in the 40s and 50s when many mainline churches and seminaries, led by unbelieving pastors and professors, lost hundreds of churches to the Fundamentalist camp. Many of those Modernists confessed to be true Christians at their ordination and at the signing of doctrinal positions but were dishonest, only pretending to be Bible Christians. Some were so radical they climbed into bed with Communists!

 

The fat hit the fire  in the late 40s when many dissatisfied Baptists, Presbyterians, Methodists, Lutherans, and a few others exposed the rabid unbelief and Communist influence in the churches, colleges, periodicals, seminaries, and mission boards. Error cannot survive with truth just as darkness cannot coexist with light.  Over serveral years, courageous fundamentalist pastors left their church buildings, denominations, friends, pulpits, income, and retirement plans to begin anew in a hired hall or storefront church. It was a singular time in religious history to be compared, with a little hyperbole, to the Egyptian Exodus and the Protestant Reformation.

 

After the division, the issue was clear: we had unbelieving Modernists on one side and believing Fundamentalists on the other side. Then, in the late 40s and early 50s a formal schism happened when more liberal pastors pulled away from fundamentalism and became “New Evangelicals.” The Fundamentalists preached strict adherence to Bible teaching that included a “coming out” principle. They taught that believers should “come out” from unbelieving organizations as many of them had done. Fundamentalists also taught that they must contend for the faith and exhort people to do the right thing at all times. They also preached what their critics thought was a little too much about Judgment and Hell to come.

 

Sometimes while preaching, Fundamentalists even took off their suit coat and rolled up their sleeves! Some even sweated profusely to the disgust of the sophisticated in their audience. It seems few want to be associated with the memory of an uncouth John the Baptist; after all, he lost his head. Most New Evangelicals don’t have to worry about that. They do lose their senses, if not their composure, when they try to explain why they left their Fundamentalist roots.

 

Moreover, Fundamentalists preached that people who had been Born Again should live as if they had a new life. Christians were expected to tell the truth, be faithful to a spouse, obey the laws, pay their bills, live godly lives, and train their children to do the same. Some leaders went to extremes and made lists for members to follow. And yes, some things on the lists were silly with no scriptural support. Of course, that was exactly what the Jewish leaders did in Christ’s day.

 

There was concern on the part of Evangelicals that Fundamentalists were not cognizant, concerned, or committed to social problems; however, Fundamentalists believed that their main message was Christ and His death and resurrection. They remembered the debacle in the 1920s when the social gospel was preached and Fundamentalistswanted to steer away from that deadly error.

 

A snooty Evangelical falsely charged that a Fundamentalist who “was prepared to even speak to a Roman Catholic was often considered liberal and fatally compromised.” Intellectually speaking, that is poppycock and a generous portion of hogwash. In more than fifty years in Fundamentalist churches I have never been aware of that–nothing close to that. That’s dishonesty.

Evangelicals were always embarrassed about Fundamentalists’ “responsible militancy.” Evangelicals only get militant opposing Fundamentalists! I have noticed that the leading Evangelicals are far more patient and kind to unbelievers than to Fundamentalists. Very strange, especially when Evangelicals speak and write so much about love and tolerance. But the love and tolerance do not go to Fundamentalists.

 

It’s a fact: if a Christian is not militant, he is not a Bible-practicing person! Not mad, or malicious, or mean, but militant.

The accusation is made that Fundamentalists always insist on a literal interpretation of scripture–even the metaphors and allegories. Nonsense, all Fundamentalists (even the dumbest among us) are aware that trees don’t have hands to clap; however, we do believe that God is trying to tell us something with every Bible passage. Even non-seminarians know that the Bible contains poetry, parables, proverbs, and prophecies as well as history.

 

A true scholar asks, “What does God want me know about that passage? Evangelicals may ask the same question, but after finding the truth of the scripture, they refuse to obey it. With them, “love” is far more important than truth; however, truth without love is coldness and love without truth is corruption.

 

The fact is, we are to be Christians who love people, principle, and precepts.
