1 John 2:3-6
“He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked,” 1 John 2:6.
John said that if we say we love Him and do not keep his commandments, we are liars, and we do not possess the truth. This sounds like an individual who says one thing and does something entirely different and probably is not saved. Since Jesus is the Truth, one who does not possess Him is not saved.
First John was written so that a doubting saint can know he is truly saved and can stop worrying about it. “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God” (1 John 5:13).
It is not our responsibility to condemn others, but one’s actions are the only witness that we have to determine that one is truly saved. When Christians are obedient to Christ’s commandments, the love of God that comes with the Holy Spirit at salvation is matured as one grows in his faith. The fruit of the Spirit and Christ’s character blooms in the Christian’s life. If Christ loved us enough to die for us, surely He expects us to share God’s love with others.
But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him (1 John 2:5).
